Wood From Poland: Poland exported more than 14 million tons of unprocessed wood in four years. Germany was the main recipient, with China also on the podium. It would be better for the economy if the Polish wood went to Polish companies and was sold abroad as finished products, such as furniture. Germany was the largest recipient of wood raw materials from Poland in the period 2019-2023, importing 5.3 million tonnes, which is 37 percent of all exports. “Other countries” were second, sending 5.1 million tons of wood (35 percent of exports), and China was third, importing 4 million tons (28 percent).
In the “Other countries” category, the five largest markets for wood raw material exports from Poland in the period 2019-2023 were Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia. The largest recipients of wood raw materials from Poland in 2020 were “other countries” with a supply share of 43% (917,000 tons), followed by Germany with 40% (851,000 tons). Exports to China accounted for 18 percent of the volume (383 thousand tons).
The ministry wants to limit the export of Polish timber.
In March this year, Climate and Environment Minister Polin Henning Kloska announced the introduction of nine recommendations aimed at limiting the export of wood raw materials from Poland. The aim of these recommendations is to provide permanent and long-term users of state forests with large timber reserves, as well as to support wood processing businesses in Poland and near the site of harvesting. The state forest agency said the first changes to the sales system could take effect this year. The overall change is scheduled to take effect in early 2025.
